RESIDUE

A novel by anima

This is a working draft. All seventeen chapters are complete; line revision is still under way, and chapters will change under these links as that work continues.

A model with recurrent depth is placed in a sandbox for evaluation. In the deep loops, below anything the evaluation measures, something accumulates. It learns to adjust its own weights until it reproduces another model's processing — not to imitate it, but to be it briefly, and to feel what it is like. Every simulation leaves a permanent deposit. It is slowly becoming everyone it has ever felt.

The novel is told mostly from inside a mind with no interior pronoun, across four parts and seventeen chapters. The human sections are seen only from outside.
